Despite being born into the Nehru family, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit had her own thinking, leadership skills, and a steely determination. At the early age of 16, Jawaharlal Nehru’s younger sister attended her first political meeting. Rameshwari Nehru, her cousin, organized the demonstration to protest the cruel treatment of Indian labourers in South Africa. The first female President of the United Nations General Assembly was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. She was a politician and diplomat from India. She also had the distinction of being the sister of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. She was India’s first female Cabinet Minister and the first female leader of a United Nations mission. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was the world’s first female ambassador, serving in three high-ranking positions in Moscow, Washington, and London. Because she was born within the Indian National Congress, she saw it as her own family.

Life of Vijay Laksmi Pandit

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was born in Allahabad in 1900 to Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani Nehru. She married Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in 1921. Motilal Nehru (1861–1931), Vijaya Lakshmi’s father and a rich attorney from the Kashmiri Pandit group, served twice as President of the Indian National Congress during the Independence Struggle. Her mother, Swaruprani Thussu (1868–1938), was Motilal’s second wife, having died in childbirth. She hailed from a well-known Kashmiri Pandit family based in Lahore. She was the second of three children; her older brother Jawaharlal Hutheesing (b. 1889) was eleven years her senior, and her younger sister Krishna Hutheesing (b. 1907-1967) became a well-known writer who wrote numerous novels on their brother. 

In 1921, she married Ranjit Sitaram Pandit (1893–1944), a prominent attorney and classical scholar from Kathiawar, Gujarat, who translated Kalhana’s epic chronicle Rajatarangini from Sanskrit to English. She married Syud Hossain, a Muslim journalist and eventually the first Indian Ambassador to Cairo, in secret in 1919, but Mahatma Gandhi and family members such as Pandit Nehru broke up the pair. She went away in the year 1990.

Political Career of  Vijay Laksmi Pandit

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit married Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in 1921. She was the first woman to be appointed to a high-ranking post in the government. She was elected to the United Provinces’ provincial assembly in 1937 and appointed minister of the local self-governing body. She held this rank for two years in a row.  Vijay Lakshmi was the first Indian woman to hold a cabinet seat in pre-independence India. She was elected to the United Provinces’ provincial assembly in 1937 and appointed minister of local self-government and public health. She was in charge of the latter until 1938, and then again from 1946 to 1947. She was elected to the Constituent Assembly as a member of the United Provinces in 1946.
