Jaya Jaitly is an Indian lawmaker and erstwhile president of the Samata Party. She is also an activist, writer, and handicrafts curator. Jaya Jaitly: Birth, Education, and Marriage

Jaya was born in the year 1942 in Shimla. Jaitly’s father Mr. K K Chettur was from Kerala. He was the first Indian ambassador of Japan.

Therefore, she had been living there for many years. When her father expired her mother came back to Delhi. She was then just thirteen years old. After returning to India, Jaya joined the Convent of Jesus and Mary school.

While Jaitly was in college, she met Ashok Jaitly and got a scholarship to study in Smith College, USA.

After studies, in 1965, she got to Ashok Jaitly. They have two kids named Akshay and Aditi. Her daughter later married cricketer Ajay Jadeja.

Political Career

Jaya Jaitly first met George Fernandes, the politician when her partner began working for him.

On Fernandes’ appeal, Jaitly joined the political party named Socialist Trade Union.

In 1984, after the Sikh riots, Jaitly became so active in political campaigns, and she credited her career in politics to Fernandes and Madhu Limaye.

Thereafter, she became a member of the Janata Party, which was split from the Janata Dal. Afterward, Jaitly and Fernandes established the Samata Party.

After forming the party, she and her husband Ashok got divorced and Jaitly says her active role in politics became the reason behind their divorce.

For over 25 years, Fernandes has remained her life partner.

Controversies

In Tehelka’s scandal called Operation West End, Jaitley was named for taking a bribe of two lakh rupees, Jaitly walked down as party president then.

In 2012, Jaya Jaitly was allowed to meet Fernandes. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s.

In 2020, Jaitly was imprisoned for 4 years in jail for her part in the Defense Contract bribe case. This act had perplexed the NDA-1 government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and blackened the impression of then-defense minister George Fernandes. This led him to resign as the Defense Minister.

In 1986, she founded Dastkari Haat Samiti, an Arts & Crafts Market to empower rural craftsmen of traditional Indian crafts to improve spirit in the marketplace through many inventive schemes.

Jaya Jaitly has authored and published many books, such as:
