Early Life
Mehbooba was born in 1959 in Akhran Nowpora, J&K, India, to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Gulshan Ara. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the Government College for Women in Jammu and a law degree from the University of Kashmir. She moved to N. Delhi in 1989 and worked for the Bombay Mercantile Bank, then for East-West Airlines before returning to J&K. Political Career
From 4 April 2016 until 19 June 2018, she was the final Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir as a state. Mehbooba became one of the most popular members of the state parliament when she was elected from Bijbehara on an Indian National Congress ticket in 1996. She eventually became the head of the opposition in the assembly, waging a savage campaign against the administration of chief minister Farooq Abdullah. She continued the same affiliation with the Bhartiya Janata Party after her father’s death in January 2016, while he was the leader of the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. She won the biggest margin in a by-election in Anantnag on June 25, 2016, and thereafter concentrated on resolving the conflict.
Mufti was the first woman to serve as Chief Minister of the state. She formed a coalition administration with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Jammu and Kashmir (BJP). She resigned after the BJP left the coalition in June 2018. Before being sworn in as the Chief Minister of J&K, Mufti was the head of the PDP and a member of the Indian parliament, representing Anantnag in the 16th Lok Sabha. She was also a member of the 14th Lok Sabha, representing Anantnag. On August 5, 2019, she was detained by the federal authorities.
